Amazon Buy Shipping vs Your Own Carrier Account for FBM

Should FBM sellers buy labels through Amazon Buy Shipping or their own carrier account? See what Buy Shipping protects, its conditions and how to decide.

Part of the E-commerce operations guide hub →

Short answer: For most Amazon FBM sellers, buying labels through Amazon Buy Shipping is the safer default, because Amazon covers the cost of certain delivery-related claims when you meet its conditions. You do not have to give up your own carrier rates to get that: Amazon lets you connect your own carrier account inside Buy Shipping and says the protection still applies. Buying labels completely outside Amazon only makes sense when you have a specific reason and accept the extra risk.

What Buy Shipping is

Buy Shipping is Amazon's tool for buying shipping labels for seller-fulfilled orders directly in Seller Central. You can use Amazon's negotiated rates with its partner carriers, or connect your own carrier account and rates. Amazon shows estimated transit times for each option, which helps you pick a service that arrives on time.

What it protects

According to Amazon's Buy Shipping page:

  • A-to-z claims for packages that do not arrive. Amazon says it will "refund costs for claims when customers report that packages don't arrive."
  • SAFE-T claims. Amazon says sellers get more SAFE-T claim reimbursements on Buy Shipping orders.
  • Your own carrier account counts. Amazon says you "get account protection for delivery-related claims either way," whether you use its rates or your own connected rates.

The conditions

The protection is not automatic. Amazon's conditions for the A-to-z protection are that you:

  1. Buy the label through Amazon Buy Shipping, not elsewhere.
  2. Ship on time, which Amazon measures by the carrier's first scan, not the date you printed the label.
  3. Answer customer messages in Buyer-Seller Messaging within 48 hours.

Miss one of these and the claim can fall back on you. In practice the second one is where most sellers slip: a label printed today but scanned tomorrow is a late shipment.

Buy Shipping vs labels bought outside Amazon

Buy Shipping (Amazon rates) Buy Shipping (your carrier connected) Labels bought outside Amazon
Delivery-claim protection from Amazon Yes, if conditions are met Yes, if conditions are met Not through Buy Shipping
Tracking uploaded to the order Automatic Automatic You upload it
Your negotiated carrier rates No Yes Yes
Risk of tracking errors Low Low Higher

Labels bought outside Amazon also put your Valid Tracking Rate at more risk, because every tracking number has to be uploaded correctly by you or your software.

When your own carrier account still matters

  • You already have good negotiated rates. Connect the account inside Buy Shipping to keep both the rates and the protection.
  • You ship oversized or special items that Amazon's rate options do not cover well. Compare carefully and document why.
  • You ship from multiple warehouses or 3PLs. Make sure each location buys labels the same way, so that protection and tracking stay consistent.

Whichever you choose, write it down as a rule for the team so that every order is shipped the same way.

Build it into your FBM process

The protection only works when every order ships on time with a scanned label and buyers get fast answers. Our guides to the Amazon FBM fulfilment workflow and Amazon account health metrics show how to set that up, and the Amazon FBM Q4 peak checklist covers the busiest weeks of the year.
